The Power of Self-Acceptance
In my book “Shatter the Sky,” I explore various life lessons, what I call ‘Merrylisms,’ that have guided me through my journey. One is: “Black don’t crack even under pressure.” This phrase might initially seem like a nod to a stereotype, but it’s much more than that. It’s about resilience and enduring strength, qualities that are not confined to any race or ethnicity.
Overcoming Societal Stereotypes
We all face societal norms and stereotypes, regardless of our race, ethnicity, or gender. These external pressures can be overwhelming, often pushing us towards conforming or acting out of character. The key is not to crack under these pressures and not to let these stereotypes define or change who we are.
Being True to Oneself
The essence of this Merryl-ism is about staying true to oneself, transcending societal norms, and not allowing external perceptions to dictate our actions or self-image. It’s a call to embrace our authentic selves, irrespective of stereotypes or expectations.
Focus on Personal Goals
The journey to self-discovery and authenticity involves focusing on our personal goals and aspirations rather than being swayed by others’ opinions or expectations. It’s about showing the world who we truly are, not who they think we should be.
The Beauty of Individuality
Each person’s uniqueness is their strength. Embracing and celebrating this individuality is crucial. We are all beautiful in our own way, and succumbing to societal pressures only diminishes that beauty.
A Message of Strength and Authenticity
In conclusion, remember to be yourself and focus on your goals. Don’t let societal pressures and stereotypes dictate who you are or how you should act. Your strength lies in your authenticity and resilience. Embrace it and show the world the real you.
